5 Tips for Portfolio Websites Made
Simple

A professional portfolio is an essential tool for creatives ranging from photographers
to graphic designers to models. It allows you to showcase your best work and
elevates your brand to capture more business opportunities. However, creating an
online portfolio can be a challenge for those unfamiliar with web design. Luckily,
there are tools that make the process easier and more manageable. Here are some
tips to create a standout portfolio website:

1. Focus on Your Goals
It’s important to understand who your audience is so you can tailor your content
accordingly. For example, if you’re looking to attract small and medium-sized
enterprises (SMEs), highlight how advanced yet accessible digital marketing
strategies can enhance their growth. If you’re targeting individuals, include
testimonials from previous clients to build trust and credibility.

2. Keep it Clean and Simple
A busy viewer doesn’t have the time to decipher your complex or overly-wordy
descriptions of each project, so keep your content short and easy-to-read.
Additionally, opt for high-legibility fonts and harmonious colors to maximize your
readers’ visual experience. Use alt tags for each image to provide context and help
search engines find your site more easily.

3. Add Relevant Details
It can be difficult to fit all your relevant work into a portfolio, so you may want to
consider including sample projects or case studies that demonstrate the breadth of
your skillset. Ensure that these samples represent your best work, and that they’re
well-executed and polished. Include a brief description of each piece, with an
emphasis on your role and how it contributed to the final product. If possible, include
key learnings or results to further demonstrate the impact of your work.

4. Keep it Up to Date
Your portfolio is a living document that will evolve over time, so don’t forget to keep
it up to date with your latest projects. This will not only give visitors an idea of your
current capabilities, but it will also highlight how you’ve grown since your last
update. Moreover, be sure to share your new pieces on social media or in a
newsletter to encourage people to visit.

5. Get Feedback
Getting feedback is an essential part of the editing process, and it’s a great way to
improve your work. Ask for constructive criticism from trusted colleagues or
mentors, and look for ways to implement their suggestions. You can also use
usability tests or surveys to evaluate your site and determine what improvements
can be made.

6. Add Testimonials
As a bonus, include testimonials from satisfied clients or employers to reinforce your
abilities and boost your credibility. These reviews will help potential clients trust your
services and can serve as an extra incentive to hire you.

7. Make It Accessible
While a password-protected portfolio can be a great way to safeguard your work, it’s
not ideal for most viewers. Most managers and supervisors have tight deadlines, so
they won’t be willing to put in the extra effort required to request a password and
return to your site. Instead, opt for a public site that provides clear contact details
and an engaging layout that draws visitors in.
